It's the night before. The gift isn't bought, the shops close in an hour, and the name on the slip belongs to someone whose taste you only half know.
The temptation is to grab whatever has a bow on it. Take ten minutes to think instead: a gift that works at the last minute is chosen, not grabbed.
A last-minute gift looks bad when it tries to hide it. Better to pick something you can actually get in the time you have, like a digital voucher, something from a nearby shop or a good card, wrap it well and write a few lines.
What you can still get today
A digital voucher, sent instantly
A gift card for a streaming service, a class at their gym or yoga studio, a cinema ticket, credit at their favorite bookshop. You buy it on the spot and they choose when to use it. Add a note explaining why you chose it.
A handwritten card with a specific memory
A handwritten card about a specific memory with that person is worth more than many objects. Add something small if you like, but what you write is what matters.
Something local and edible, on the way
Good cheese, olive oil, chocolate or honey from a shop on your way. A good local product doesn't look last-minute.
Money with intention
Money with a purpose written on the card: “for the book you mentioned”, “for the plant you liked”. Plain cash is cold; with a reason, it shows you paid attention.
Two tips
Wrap it well: even a gift card deserves paper and a ribbon. And don't pretend you bought it weeks ago; a light joke about the rush goes down better.
Draw now, then go shopping
Create a Cuchumbo and draw names in under a minute. Even late, everyone knows straight away who they're buying for and can read their hints.
