In the second year someone says “same as last year?” and the whole group nods. Three weeks later it turns out the cousin who moved abroad was never asked, the new neighbour wasn't invited and the kids from the first draw wanted a different kind of gift.
A tradition survives by changing a little each year. The mistake in year two is running year one again unchanged. Groups change: someone moves, someone joins, the kids from the first draw grow up.
The practical approach is to reuse the list and the rules and adjust whatever changed.
Repeating it year after year
Repeat, don't start over
Create the new exchange from the previous one. The participant list is already there; you only change the date and whatever else changed. If setting up year two takes a minute, year three is more likely to happen.
Change the theme, keep the format
Change one thing each year, like the theme: handmade, food, books. Keep one thing fixed, like the budget or how gift day works. What changes makes each year different; what stays makes it recognizably the same tradition.
Bring newcomers in
When someone joins the group, explain how it works: past themes, running jokes, who always gives books. That way they feel part of it from their first year.
A shared album
Keep each gift day's photos in a shared album. Over the years, looking back at the first exchanges becomes part of the tradition.
Repeat the exchange in one click
Cuchumbo can create next year's exchange from this one: it keeps the list and you change the date.
