Moving the date isn't canceling: the exchange is still on, just on another day. What needs care is telling the group in time and not pushing the date so far out that people lose interest.
Moving a mid-December exchange to the first week of January usually works; moving it to February rarely does.
Changing the date, step by step
Change the date early
People plan their shopping around the date. If you can see it won't work, change it as soon as you know. A week's notice is enough; two or three weeks gives anyone shipping a gift time to spare.
Pick a day the group already meets
Look for a date when the group is already getting together: a Three Kings dinner, the first week back from holidays, someone's birthday. A day with no occasion attached is easier to forget.
The draw stays the same
If the draw already happened, it still stands. A new date doesn't mean a new draw. Say it plainly: “Same draw, new date. Whoever you got, you still have.” That way nobody loses what they've already bought.
Send the new details in one message
Send one message with the new date, the venue if it changed and the same budget, and pin it in the group chat. One complete message saves a week of questions.
When not to move it
If the date fell through because the group lost interest, moving it won't fix that. In that case it's better to cancel and try again next year.
Change the date in Cuchumbo
On your organizer page, “Edit details” lets you change the date without touching the participants, the budget or the draw. When you save, the new date shows on every participant's page.
